Youth and Education at
The Academy Theatre
Summer & Winter Camps
We just wrapped-up another exciting week of acting, singing, dancing, costuming, scenic design, and so much more with Summer Theatre Camp 2018! Over 30 students, ranging in ages from 8 to 12 years, spent last week with Academy Theatre staff and volunteers, exploring the exciting world of the arts and live entertainment. Students took a tour of our costume room and learned what goes into bringing a character to life through color, fabric, and clothing. They delved into scenic design, by listening to a story, and thinking about the different set pieces it would take to tell that story. They also designed their very own props, which they performed with on stage! They studied music and voice; students were exposed to vocal warm-ups, sheet music, and what those notes on the page sound like. Students were taught choreography combos in an audition-like setting and time frame. And finally, the art of acting and improv was introduced through a variety of acting and improv games throughout the week.
At the final day of camp, students were encouraged to invite their friends and family to the Summer Theatre Camp 2018 Showcase. There, students performed song and dance numbers like “Magic To Do,” from Pippin, “King of New York,” from Newsies, and “Let’s Go Fly A Kite,” from Mary Poppins, complete with their very own self-designed props! Students also presented a few of their favorite improv games, as well as an audible thunderstorm simulation. We had a wonderful week at the Academy Theatre, and we look forward to Winter Theatre Camp 2019 in January!
