Elementary Summer Camp with Jessica Surdyk(for students having completed Grades 2-6)

  • Dates: June 14-25, Monday through Friday
  • Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
  • Tuition: $50 per student

Campers at the Academy will take part in theatre games, improv exercises and acting exercises. They will also learn about auditioning procedures, stage conduct, and some technical skills. The program concludes with a special performance on stage that family and friends are invited to attend. Deadline for enrollment is June 4.

Jessica Surdyk is a graduate of Edinboro University with a with a B.A. in theatre arts and has been working as a theatre director and educator since then. Her most recent productions were Assassins for Meadville Community Theatre and Willy Wonka for the Academy. Ms. Surdyk has been the Academy’s Youth Camp Director for the past 3 years. She also conducts private audition coaching sessions and is a talented lighting and set designer.

Advanced Summer Youth Camp with Jessica Surdyk (for students having completed Grades 10-12)
    • Dates: June 14-25, Monday through Friday
    • Time: Teaching Option, 9:00am - 3:30pm; Non-Teaching Option, 12:30pm- 3:30pm
    • Tuition: Teaching Option, $25 per student; Non-Teaching Option, $50 per student

Teaching option participants will help coach the Elementary Youth Theatre Camp students as well as create lesson plans and performance project ideas for the morning group; and both Teaching and Non-Teaching options will take advanced courses on auditioning, character building, and technique in the afternoon. Deadline for enrollment is June 4.

 

Theatre Masterclass Series with Marc Weagraff (for students ages 14-19)

Basic Musical Theatre

  • Dates: June 28 - July 2
  • Time: 9:00am- 12:00pm*
  • Tuition: $60 per student

Through activities, exercises, script study and analysis, the participants will explore and develop a greater mastery of live stage performance.  The students will develop facility with stage movement and study two major acting methods: Stanislavski and Wesley Balk, directly applying these tactics to musical selections. Students will also explore the basics of “stage violence” including both incidental and simple combat. Deadline for enrollment is June 18.

*Afternoon session may be possible if attendance dictates, and would be 1:00pm- 4:00pm.

Advanced Musical Theatre

  • Dates: July 5-9
  • Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm
  • Tuition: $75 per student

Students who have already taken the Basic Musical Theatre course will have the opportunity to expand on and apply the concepts they’ve learned by preparing and performing a one-act play. Students will discuss character choices and analysis as well as continue the study of “stage violence” by choreographing and performing short sequences as part of the closing program. Deadline for enrollment is June 18.

Voice

  • Dates: July 5-9
  • Time: 1:00pm - 4:00pm
  • Tuition: $75 per student

Students will explore the physical and technical use of the voice- primarily in singing but also in spoken stage speech, as well as techniques of singing including breathing, projection, and diction for various styles of music. Students should prepare at least two songs of different styles to be coached during the week. The week will conclude with a public performance of the songs prepared in the workshop. Deadline for enrollment is June 18.

 

 Marc Weagraff holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, and a Masters and Bachelors of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Currently, Dr. Weagraff is a faculty member at Baldwin-Wallace College where he teaches opera history, art song literature, and voice.  His voice students have been heard on Broadway, network television, national tours, regional theater and opera houses throughout the United States, France and Austria, and in major graduate programs.
