The Academy Theatre has announced the audition dates for the first two productions of their upcoming 2014-15 Season “It’s All In The Timing.” Interested actors and actresses should mark their calendars! “The Addams Family Musical” will audition on Friday, July 25 from 5pm-8pm and Sunday, July 27 from 4pm-6pm; “White Christmas” will audition on Thursday, July 31 from 6pm-9pm and Sunday, August 3 from 6pm-9pm. More details can be found by calling the Academy Theatre Box Office at 814-337-8000.
With a touch of whimsy and tongues firmly planted in-cheek, “The Addams Family Musical” will simultaneously transport adult audiences back to the story they love while introducing young audiences to a weird family with a new twist. In this new musical, scheduled to debut at the Academy Theatre in October, Gomez and Morticia have their hands full when a grown up Wednesday brings home the boy she loves. Are this “normal” boy and his “normal” family too much for the Addams Family?
“The Addams Family Musical” is set to be directed by Academy Theatre Artistic Director Sarah Wolford, with choreography by Sylvia Cagle. The production is looking to fill the roles of Gomez Addams (male, mid-40s), Morticia Addams (female, mid-40s), Uncle Fester (male, late 30s), Grandma (female, 60s), Wednesday Addams (female, 18), Pugsley Addams (male, teenager), Lurch (male, middle-aged), Mal Beineke (male, 40s), Alice Beineke (female, 40s), Lucas Beineke (male, 18), and The Addams Ancestors (male and female, teenagers and older). Light dancing required of most roles.
Interested actors and actresses should come prepared to sing a song of their choice; the entire song or a shorter portion may be sung. Please provide either the sheet music (an accompanist will be available) or a CD to sing along with. Auditioners will also be asked to read selections from the script, which will be made available for review at the beginning of auditions. There will be a movement audition as well. Bring or wear comfortable clothing that you can move in. Auditioners will be given a short, simple combination to perform in groups.

Adding more nostalgia to the mix is “White Christmas,” set to take the Academy Theatre stage in December. This beloved holiday tale is based on the Irving Berlin movie of the same name and is sure to delight audiences of all ages. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. The two ollow a duo of beautiful singing sisters to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander.
Directed by Sue Wentz, who recently brought “Les Miserables” to the Academy Theatre, and with Musical Direction by Tim Solomon, “White Christmas” is looking to fill the following roles: Bob Wallace (late 20s to mid 30s, a superb singer with a crooning style who moves well), Phil Davis (late 20s to mid 30s, strong jazz and tap-dancing needed – a song-and-dance comic performer), Betty Haynes (mid to late 20s, a female singer of quiet beauty and charm who must move well), Judy Haynes (early 20s, strong jazz and tap-dancing needed – a major song-and-dance performer), General Henry Waverly (late 50s to mid 60s, with the exception of one line, a non-singing role), Martha Watson (late 40s to mid 60s, a winning, appealing character-comedienne), Susan Waverly (9 years old, she must have an excellent belt voice and be able to move well), Ralph Sheldrake (mid to late 30s), Rita (mid 20s to early 30s), Rhoda (mid 20s to early 30s), Ezekiel Foster (mid 40s to late 50s), Mike (mid 20s to late 20s), and others.
Interested auditionees should be able to act, sing and dance. Everyone should show up at 6:00 on the evening of their choosing to learn a short dance combination, taught by the show’s choreographer. At 6:30 in groups of three, dancers will display their mastery of the combo in front of the auditioners. From 7:00 to 9:00, auditionees will individually sing a Broadway song of their choosing. The entire song or a shorter portion may be sung. An accompanist will be provided. Please prepare a piece in advance and bring either the sheet music for the accompanist or a sound track cd accompaniment to present your best work for the audition. In addition, each audition will include a reading from the script of the show. Selections will be available at the beginning of the audition so that each person will have a chance to look over the reading. The casting of “White Christmas” calls for a variety of actors, ages 16 and older, plus one female child between 9 and 11 years of age. The child will also need to act, sing and dance.
